Christian Hoiberg es un fotógrafo de naturaleza y paisajes nacido en Noruega. Su afición por la fotografía y los viajes lo han llevado a visitar algunos de los lugares más bonitos de nuestro planeta. Nos cuenta que ese momento en el que trabaja con su cámara es en el que desconecta de todo y solo percibe toda la belleza que nos rodea.
Compró su primera cámara a los 15 años y comenzó, como casi todo el mundo, sin entender demasiado bien lo que hacía ni donde tocaba. Feliz con los ajustes “automáticos”. Sin embargo, en un momento, después de varios años haciendo fotos, sintió la necesidad de comprender mejor la cámara y aprender fotografía. Después de aprender a usar el modo Manual y obtener los mejores resultados de su equipo su pasión fue creciendo hasta darse cuenta de que es lo que quería hacer el resto de su vida. Desde entonces, persigue ese sueño y cada día da forma a esa vida que tan feliz le hace.
Su trabajo transmite de una manera limpia y sencilla la belleza de los lugares que muestra. Una búsqueda muy intensa de nuevos encuadres y ambientes así como muy buen gusto en la forma de presentarlas.
- Camera Lucida: Cuéntanos algo sobre ti.
Christian Hoiberg: Mi nombre es Christian Hoiberg y soy un fotógrafo noruego. Durante el último año y medio he estado escribiendo tutoriales de fotografía en mi web CaptureLandscapes. También he escrito dos eBook, uno de los cuales está disponible para su descarga gratuita.
Me encanta viajar y explorar nuevas culturas y regiones y no tardo en volver a planear (o a soñar con) un nuevo destino, una vez he vuelto del último.
- Camera Lucida: Tell us about yourself.
Christian Hoiberg: My name is Christian Hoiberg and I’m a Norwegian landscape and travel photographer. For the past year and a half I’ve been sharing landscape photography tutorials, inspirational articles and much more through my website CaptureLandscapes. I’ve also written two eBooks, one of which is available for free.
I love traveling and exploring new cultures and regions and it doesn’t take until I start planning (or dreaming about) my next adventure.
- CL: ¿Por qué elegiste la fotografía de paisaje?
CH: Desde que compré mi primera cámara me interesó la fotografía de exteriores. Soy un gran amante de la naturaleza y siempre fue una buena forma de distraerme del ruido diario. Tenemos demasiadas distracciones en nuestra vida y cada vez es mas raro que nos tomemos el tiempo necesario para disfrutar de nuestros alrededores. Cuando estoy fuera, inmerso en la naturaleza, dejo todas mis preocupaciones atrás y me tomo un tiempo para relajarme y observar.
También me siento atraído hacia las montañas y la costa y hacia lo misterioso que hay en ellas. Sigo imaginando como debía ser la vida en algunos de esos lugares hace cientos e incluso miles de años.
- CL: Why landscape photography?
CH: Ever since I bought my first camera, I’ve been mostly interested in photographing the outdoors. I’m a big fan of nature and it’s always been a great distraction from a noisy weekday. We have way too many distractions in our lives and it’s rare that we take the time to actually enjoy our surroundings. When I’m out in nature I leave all other worries behind and I take the time to slow down and observe.
Also, I’m often drawn towards rugged mountains or coastlines as there’s something mysterious about them. I keep imagining what life was like there hundreds, or even thousands of years ago.
- CL: ¿Qué opinion tienes sobre la controversia en torno al post procesado? ¿Que importancia tiene en tu trabajo fotográfico?
CH: Siendo honesto, creo que la fotografía es un arte y el artista es libre de hacer lo que quiera. Si quiere mostrar unicornios, arco iris y ballenas voladoras ¿Quién soy yo para decir que no puede hacerlo?
Sin embargo mi problema es cuando un artista intenta hacer pasar por real una imagen fuertemente manipulada. Si combinas diferentes imágenes de sitios distintos, no deberías añadir una descripción del tipo: “¡el atardecer de hoy ha sido alucinante!”.
Se honesto con tu trabajo y siéntete orgulloso de él. La honestidad gana siempre a largo plazo.
El post procesado es muy importante en mi trabajo fotográfico. No por manipular las imágenes, sino porque me da la oportunidad de realizar ajustes que ayudan a realzar la atmósfera de la imagen. Me gusta mantener mis imágenes tan reales como sea posible así que no añado o quito elementos (excepto las motas de polvo del sensor. ¡No me gustan nada!). De cualquier manera, mi objetivo principal es compartir lo que yo percibí que no es lo mismo que yo vi. Todos percibimos detalles diferentes y son esos los que trato de enfatizar.
- CL: What do you think about the post-processing controversy? How important is post-processing for you?
CH: To be quite honest I believe that photography is art and the artist is free to do whatever he wants. If the artist wishes to add unicorns, rainbows and flying whales, who am I to say that he can’t do that?
However, my issue is when an artist tries to claim a heavily manipulated image as real. If you combine several images from different locations I don’t think you should say in the description that “tonight’s sunset was amazing”.
Be honest about your work and be proud of it: honesty wins the long game.
Post-processing is very important in my photography. Not because I manipulate the images but because I have the option to make minor adjustments that can enhance the atmosphere of the image. I want to keep my images as real as possible so I don’t add or remove elements (except for dust spots, I don’t like them!). However, my main goal is to share what I saw with my eyes and that’s not always the same as you saw. We all notice different details and it’s these details I try to emphasize.
- CL: ¿Hay algún lugar especifico que te gustaría fotografiar? ¿Por qué?
CH: ¡Difícil pregunta! Después de vivir un año en el norte de España, se ha convertido en uno de mis regiones favoritas para explorar. Tiene una costa muy accidentada y unas montañas muy especiales, ¿qué más se puede pedir? Supongo que esta zona me trae muy buenos recuerdos y siento que es como un segundo hogar.
También he estado tratando de fotografiar en sitios más cercanos durante el pasado año. Es raro pensar en lo fácil que ha sido viajar a otros países antes que a través del mio. Noruega es un país fantástico para la fotografía ya que tenemos los preciosos fiordos al oeste y las majestuosas montañas hacia el norte.
- CL: Are there any specific places you love to shoot? Why?
CH: This is a hard question! After living one year in Northern Spain, that’s become one of my favorite regions to explore. It has a rugged coastline and picturesque mountains, so what more can I ask about? I guess this region also brings back a lot of good memories and it feels like a second home
I’ve also been trying to photograph more locally during the last year. It’s weird how it has always been easier to travel abroad than within my own country. Norway is a fantastic country for photography as we have both the beautiful fjords in the west and the majestic mountains in the north.
- CL: ¿Qué equipo llevas contigo?
CH: No siempre llevo todo mi equipo conmigo pero uso una Nikon D810 con un Nikkor 16–35mm f/4, Nikkor 14–24mm f/2.8, Nikkor 70–200mm f/2.8 and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. Acabo de comprar una Fujifilm X-T2 con un Fujifilm 23mm f/1.4 que uso como respaldo y en las excursiones/caminatas más largas. También un dron DJI Mavic para buscar nuevas perspectivas. Mi trípode es un Induro CT314.
Aparte de eso, también confío en el uso de filtros . Trabajo con NiSi, 6 y 10 pasos y graduados. Ahora mismo también estoy haciendo pruebas de algunos nuevos.
- CL: What kind of gear you take along with you?
CH: I don’t always bring all my gear but I use a Nikon D810 w/ Nikkor 16–35mm f/4, Nikkor 14–24mm f/2.8, Nikkor 70–200mm f/2.8 and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. I also just bought the Fujifilm X-T2 w/ Fujifilm 23mm f/1.4 that I’ll use as my backup camera and on longer hikes/expeditions. I also use the DJI Mavic to reach some new perspectives. My current tripod is the Induro CT314.
Besides the hardware I also rely on the use of filters. I work with NiSi filters and use their 6 stop, 10 stop and grad filters and I’m currently testing some upcoming filters as well.
- CL: ¿Hay algo específico que estés explorando artísticamente?
CH: De echo, si. Me he propuesto como objetivo para 2017 el trabajar más en imágenes en blanco y negro. No he dedicado nunca demasiado tiempo a trabajar en blanco y negro pero he empezado a darme cuenta de lo poderosas que pueden ser las imágenes. Es diferente de lo que suelo hacer pero me gustaría elaborar un portfolio especifico. Se que tengo muchas imágenes que podrían encajar en este estilo pero tendré que trabajar en las técnicas de procesado.
Me gustaría también pasar más tiempo practicando fotografía aérea con el dron y ahora que tengo el Mavic será mucho más fácil llevarlo en mis largas excursiones. ¡Espero poder conseguir nuevas perspectivas de sitios tanto muy conocidos como casi desconocidos muy pronto!
- CL: Is there anything specific you’re exploring artistically?
CH: Actually, yes. I’ve set a goal for 2017 to work more with B&W images. I’ve never spend much time working with B&W but I’ve began to realize just how powerful these images can be. It’s far away from my “regular” stuff but I want to build a stronger B&W portfolio as well. I know I’ve got many images that can suit this style but I’ll have to work on the processing techniques.
I’m also spending more time photographing aerial images with the drone and now that I’ve got the DJI Mavic it’s much easier to bring on longer hikes. I hope to get some new perspectives of both known and unknown locations soon!
- CL: Si un fotógrafo principiante te pregunta por un consejo, ¿qué le dirías?
CH: Mi primer consejo sería que pasara tiempo suficiente aprendiendo el manejo de su cámara y como los diferentes ajustes funcionan conjuntamente. Esta parte técnica puede que no sea tan divertida pero es extremadamente importante para mejorar. Si empiezas a practicar por lo más básico, tendrás una gran ventaja más adelante.
También le diría que tratara de mantenerse fiel a su estilo y no deje influenciarse demasiado por los demás. Solo por no conseguir 10 mil likes en Instagram, no significa que tus fotografías no son buenas. Continua trabajando en tu propio estilo y poco a poco verás la recompensa.
- CL: If a beginning photographer would ask your for an advice, what would you tell him?
CH: My first advice is to spend time learning the camera and how the different settings work together. This technical part might not be fun but it’s extremely important once you start getting a better understanding of photography and your images start to improve. If start working on the basics at an early phase you’ll have a huge advantage later on.
I also would say that he should stay true to his style and try not to be too influenced by the work of others. Just because you’re not getting 10k likes on Instagram it doesn’t mean that your images aren’t good. Continue working on your style and you’ll see it pay off.
- CL: ¿Cual es tu fotografía favorita y por qué?
CH: ¡Otra pregunta difícil! Creo que no tengo ninguna imagen favorita en concreto, pero una que significa mucho para mi es una con un ambiente oscuro en Islandia. La razón es que requirió mucho esfuerzo, trabajo y paciencia y el resultado del sufrimiento valió la pena.
Solo porque el clima es malo o las condiciones no son las ideales, no significa que no puedas sacar una buena fotografía. Solo hay que trabajar más duro que si el atardecer es colorido y “perfecto”. Busca algo interesante. ¿Qué aspectos del entorno potencia esa atmósfera? Ahí es donde deberías estar apuntando tu cámara.
- CL: What is the favorite photo you took and why?
CH: Another tough question! I don’t think I have one specific image that is my favorite but one image that means a lot to me is a dark and moody image from Iceland. The reason it means a lot to me is that it was an image that required a lot of work and patience and the result of some suffering was worth it.
Just because the weather is bad or the conditions aren’t ideal, doesn’t mean that you can’t take a good image. You just have to work harder than if the sunset was colorful and “perfect”. Look for anything interesting, what aspects of the scene does the moody weather enhance? That’s where you should be aiming your camera.
- CL: ¿Donde encuentras inspiración y cuales son tus influencias? ¿Cuales son tus fotógrafos favoritos, pasados o presentes?
CH: Hay muchísimos lugares donde encuentro inspiración. Las redes sociales son geniales y hay muchos fotógrafos de talento pero a veces, prefiero dar un paso fuera del mundo digital para buscar inspiración. Creo que los museos y las galerías de arte son igualmente inspiradores. Incluso aunque mi estilo es bastante diferente, me encantan las pinturas del tipo J.C. Dahl.
No tengo ningún fotógrafo favorito pero disfruto mucho de la fotografía aérea de Stavros Charisopoulos y el trabajo abstracto de Diego Lopez. Resulta que a menudo disfruto del trabajo de fotógrafos cuyo trabajo es de un estilo diferente al mío. También me gusta Sarah Marino, Erin Babnik y mi amigo Dag Ole Nordheim.
- CL: Where do you find your inspiration and who are your influences? Who are some of you favorite photographers past or present?
CH: There are so many places I find inspiration. Social media is great as there are many talented photographers there but sometimes I want to step away from the digital world to find inspiration. I find art galleries and museums to be inspirational as well. Even though my style is quite different, I enjoy viewing old paintings from artists such as J.C Dahl.
I don’t really have a favorite photographer but I really enjoy the aerial work of Stavros Charisopoulos and the abstract work of Diego Lopez. I find that I often enjoy the work of photographers who have a quite different style than myself. I also enjoy the work from Sarah Marino, Erin Babnik, and my friend Dag Ole Nordheim.
- CL: ¿Que proyectos/series tienes en mente?
CH: Como antes he comentado, fotografiar más mi país. Estoy trabajando en un proyecto más extenso donde me enfocaré en diferentes paisajes de Noruega.
Además de eso, haré un par de viajes este año y estoy muy emocionado por visitar Washington y Oregon durante dos semanas. Pasaré una semana explorando la zona y 3 días subiendo a la cima de mi montaña favorita: ¡Mt. Rainer!
- CL: Any future projects/series in mind?
CH: As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been working on photographing more in my home country of Norway. I am working on an extended project where I focus on the different Norwegian landscapes.
Besides that I’ve got a couple trips lined up this year but I’m most excited to be visiting Washington and Oregon in the PNW for two weeks. I’ll spend one week exploring the region and 3 days summiting my favorite mountain: Mt. Rainier!
